I find it so ridiculous how many people write into Tom Brevoort’s formspring to complain about David Lafuente’s art on Ultimate Comics Spider-man.  It is crazy how many complain that his art is too manga-y. First of all, Manga isn’t a single style? Secondly, just because something is stylized does not mean that it is even referencing the art of Japan…Thirdly, it is BEAUTIFUL.

Seriously? People are insane. Lafuente is BRILLIANT, and he’s been improving by leaps and bounds since he first arrived on the Marvel scene three years ago. Stuart Immonen is one of my favorite comics artists (hey, there’s another underrated genius) and yet I’m finding I like Lafuente’s USM work way more than either his or Bagley’s. Lafuente’s art is kinetic, dramatic but not entirely serious, and he can draw a cast of six regular teenage characters (3 boys/3 girls) and make every single one of them look different with a mix of fashion choices and body type. That’s pretty much unheard of in mainstream American comics.
Also, he makes up the best fake brands for background detail. Burger Frog for the win.
Also also, mad props to Justin Ponsor, who makes Lafuente’s art really pop. Colorists don’t get nearly enough credit for what they do.
